Automobiles come with so many technology upgrades that you might not know all they can do. One such gadget is the key fob. You probably know that you can locate your vehicle as well as lock and unlock it, but did you know that you can use the fob to do other tasks? Learn all about the tricks your Ford key fob can do to make your life a little easier.

How Do You Program the Ford Key Fob?

Before you learn about tricks you can use with your Ford key fob, you need to program it. Once you either purchase a Ford vehicle or buy a new key fob, you’ll need to reset your fob. To do that, follow these steps:

  • Make sure all the vehicle’s doors are closed. Open the driver’s side door, and push the unlock button located on the door.
  • Place the key in the ignition. Switch the key from Off to Run eight times in 10 seconds. You don’t need to start the engine during this step. This causes the door locks to go from locked to unlocked and informs the vehicle that you’re programming the fob.
  • Push any button on the fob. Do this step within eight seconds of the previous step.
  • Turn off the vehicle when you’re done. The door locks might cycle once again to exit the cycling mode.
  • Repeat this process if you have more than one key fob.

Now that you’ve programmed the Ford key fob, you’re ready to put it to use.

Raise and Lower Your Windows

While this trick is likely in your owners manual, you might not know about it, so it’s a great trick to have up your sleeve. It comes in handy if you want to ventilate your car before entering, especially in the suffocating heat of the summer. To complete this trick, click the fob’s Unlock button twice and then hold down the button for the third time. To roll the windows back up, do the same thing by clicking the Unlock buttons. If your vehicle has a sunroof, this step will also open it.

Start Your Vehicle Remotely

If your Ford vehicle has a remote start option, you can use the key fob to turn it on. Ford’s key fobs have a circular arrow logo with “2x” or “x2” positioned inside the circle. Press the Lock button, which locks the vehicle’s doors from as far away as 425 feet, and push the Remote Start (2x or x2) button twice. You’ll notice the vehicle’s exterior lights flash twice, and then the vehicle should start. You might also notice that the key fob flashes green to inform you the vehicle has started.

Open Your Trunk Remotely

You might notice that your Ford key fob has a button to specifically open the vehicle’s trunk or liftgate. It might have an image of a vehicle with an open trunk hatch. Simply double-click the button’s image to pop it open. Ford SUVs with a power liftgate, such as the Expedition or Escape, have a liftgate that you can open just by waving your leg under the bumper near the tow hitch as long as the key fob is within 3 feet of the SUV.

Fold in Your Mirrors

While some Ford vehicles automatically fold in the side mirrors as part of the door-locking process, others offer this as an optional feature that you need to activate. Depending on the model, you might be able to fold in the side mirrors by holding down the fob’s Lock button for a full second. This is an essential feature for Ford SUVs or pickup trucks that have large side mirrors.

Ford MyKey Registration

If you’re lending your car to younger, less experienced drivers, you might want the reassurance that they’re obeying the laws and being careful once they get behind the wheel. Ford’s MyKey system lets you set audio and speed restrictions for these secondary drivers, and you can activate the registration via the key fob. To activate this feature, follow these steps:

  • Turn on the vehicle.
  • Access the main menu on the touch-screen display, and select Settings.
  • Choose MyKey, and then select Create MyKey.
  • Press OK to register the key.
  • Return to the MyKey menu to select the features you wish to change if you want to adjust the settings.

The MyKey settings are now registered, and the vehicle will automatically implement the restrictions you’ve chosen for stereo volume and speed limits once you insert the key into the ignition.

Stay Safe at Nighttime

Take a look at your key fob, and you’ll notice a red button. This is a panic button that will set off an emergency alarm once you push it. Setting off this feature can ward off potential criminals when you’re near your vehicle. You can also activate the alarm to ward off home break-ins. Keep your fob by your nightstand, and if you hear something at night, you can hit the button to ward off criminals.

What Happens If Your Key Fob Dies?

Since the Ford key fob uses a battery, the battery might die and potentially leave you stranded since you might think you cannot get into your vehicle without it. The good news is that you don’t need to immediately call AAA to get back on the road. One of the easiest ways to open your Ford’s door without the fob is to use Ford’s SYNC Connect program, which is accessible via the FordPass app found on your phone. This is only an option if your Ford vehicle is a 2016 model or newer.

You can also use the hidden key found on the fob to unlock the door manually. To locate the key, push the two small buttons found on the side of the keychain’s end. You should notice the Ford logo raised slightly so you can pop out the key.
